DIY Natural Skincare and Beauty Products

When it comes to skincare and beauty products there isn’t a lot out there I haven’t tried from $20 Mascara to $300 for 20ml of eye cream. However, recently I have shifted my search from beauty clinics to the supermarket. When I say ‘supermarket’ I specifically mean the baking aisle. Yes baking… that is not a typo.

This blog shares a couple of my favourite recipes. Most of the ingredients can be found at the supermarket but there are a few key items you might need to go to the Chemist for.

You will note that castor oil is a key ingredient in most of my recipes.

Castor oil is a natural ingredient that has been used for thousands of years. According to www.medicalnewsdaily.com it has the following benefits;

  • Anti-inflammatory: Castor oil demonstrates anti-inflammatory properties. This makes them useful for treating irritated skin and acne.

  • Moisturising: Castor oil contains triglycerides. These can help maintain moisture in the skin, making it a useful treatment for dry skin.

  • Cleansing: The triglycerides found in castor oil are also helpful in removing dirt from the skin.

Facial exfoliators – I like to exfoliate at least 2x per week but I have sensitive skin. When creating a homemade exfoliator I needed to find a recipe which is gentle but effective.

Facial exfoliator

  • 2x tablespoons of coconut oil

  • 2x teaspoon of castor oil

  • 2-4 teaspoons of cinnamon (start with 2 and see how it feels you can add more if you want a stronger exfoliating effect).

  • Mix it together to combine well and you are ready to use.

Body scrub - I follow the same recipe as above but change out the cinnamon for a stronger exfoliating effect.

  • 2x tablespoons of coconut oil

  • 2x teaspoons of castor oil

  • 2-4 teaspoons of raw sugar or expresso coffee (start with 2 and see how it feels you can add more if you want a stronger exfoliating effect) just don’t use instant coffee as it doesn’t work

  • Mix it together to combine well and you are ready to use

Overnight moisturiser

  • 2x tablespoons of coconut oil

  • 1x tablespoon of castor oil

This is quite a sticky recipe so be prepared to have to change your pillow case. It looks greasy but by the morning it’s all soaked into the skin.

Dry Shampoo

This is a must have beauty product for any mother. I have been using the below recipe for the last couple of weeks and it works. I am still really careful about how I apply it but it definitely soaks up grease.

Blondes

  • ½ cup of cornflour

Brunettes

  • ½ cup of cornflour

  • 1x table spoon of cocoa powder

I apply with a loose large makeup brush. I have read that talcum powder can substitute the cornflour but I am yet to try that one.

I have also been using castor oil on my eye lashes instead of expensive eye lash serums. I can notice a difference. At this stage I don’t think its quite as effective but I will let you know in future blogs.

Eyelash and eye brow serum

Apply a small amount of castor oil to your eye brows and eye lashes before bed .
