Nude shopping - My change one challenge

Updated: Jun 12, 2019

If you're reading this because of the title this article may not be what you think!

July is fast approaching so I'm gearing up for the Change One Challenge. What's that you ask? It's an annual event that challenges Kiwis to 'change one thing' in their daily lives to reduce waste and live more sustainably.

You might think the difference you make will be small but this is where the power of numbers comes into play. The more people who get involved the bigger the difference we can make. Imagine if 1,000 people decide to start using a reusable coffee cup. That's 52,000 less coffee cups going to a landfill each year.

The Challenge runs from 1 July - 31 July every year. You can find all the details and plenty of inspiration for things to change on the Change One Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/changeonechallenge/. Remember it only has to be something small so even something as simple as remembering to bring your reusable bags to the supermarket counts. You can sign up for the Challenge now on the website (www.changeone.nz). While you don't have to sign up to make change if you do you'll be connected to a whole lot of local Kiwi businesses and voices in sustainability who are giving participants discounts, information, tips, hints and motivation to inspire your sustainability journey. And you guessed it! They have loads of prizes and giveaways of innovative products that can help you to lead a more sustainable life.

What's my challenge

Now that I've given you the background let me share what my challenge will be. I've already made several simple swaps in my life like reusable bags, coffee cups and cloth nappies (even potty training a baby but that's another story - read more about that here). So I'm really challenging myself with my grocery shop. For the month of July I pledge to make my grocery shopping as nude as possible. Basically I'm going to try as best I can to not buy any products with plastic packaging. This is going to be quite a challenge as there are many things I buy today that come in plastic packaging, where I know I could make change, but they are just so convenient (ready-made pizza bases I'm looking at you). Given that I still have a few weeks before my challenge starts I need to do some planning and preparation to give myself a better chance of success. I'll keep you updated as my planning progresses and throughout the month of July as I work through the challenge.

In the meantime I'd really encourage you to sign up to the challenge and find something in your own life where you can make a change. It doesn't have to be something huge, every little bit helps. Get your friends and family onboard and let's all make a difference this July.
